Will the pneumonia vaccine help for those with asthma or COPD if they get the swine flu?
If a person gets the swine flu and then pneumonia as a secondary infection, would the vaccine help at all?

No. The CDC even stated that the flu vaccine given 08-09 will not prevent the swine flu. Let's just hope that it dissipates soon and doesn't turn into an epidemic.
The No part at the beginning is the answer about the pneumonia vaccine. It only covers strains of bacterial pneumonia.

The other person that answered was talking about the flu vaccine. I'm not sure of the answer to your question.... I have COPD and I have the pneumonia vaccine... I would guess it WOULD help. But your question is a very good one. This just isn't a great place to ask it. Call your health department ... even THEY may not know the answer... but I'm feeling more comfortable that this flu isn't going to be as bad as first reported... It was scary thinking how vulnerable I may be.

There are several types of pneumonia. The pneumonia vaccine will only protect against a specific type of lung infection that is caused by Pneumococcus bacterium. There are more than 80 different types of pneumococcus bacteria- 23 of these are covered in the current vaccination. The pneumonia will prevent you from developing those 23 types of pneumonia as a primary or secondary disease only.
The pneumonia vaccine is good to have if you have COPD or asthma but will not prevent all pneumonias.
You are more likely to get the pneumonia or the regular flu then your are the swine flu. Keep you living area clean, wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap, and stay away from sick people.

pneumonia vaccine will help you fight a secondary infection and its recommended you have this vaccine if you have copd or severe asthma.
