Should humans be periodically dewormed?
If you check out internet sites that sell all sorts of quack antiworming medicines theres a pretty common claim that some huge percentage of all humans are currently parasatized with some nasty worm or other...Blood flukes. Hookworms. The list is endless... and in order to cure you of this nightmare the website offers its own particular brand of snakeoil. They go on to claim that these parasites are the cause of everything from asthma to cancer and that we could all reap mystical benefits from being purged.
What I want to ask is: 1) How prevalent are parasites in humans. 2) Is there any point in being periodically dewormed with some general dewormer? 3) Is it even medically feasible to be dewormed when there are over 1000 species of parasites? 4) Does anyone actually do this?

I would recommend purging any parasites using control over your inner body as in QiGong. Of course, nothing but hard work and discipline will help against the worst parasite of all. As far as most worms, avoid eating uncooked pork and you should be ok.

Let me tell you first off that I am a taeniaphobe (tapeworm phobia). I hate parasitic organisms that take up residence in the human body. They terrify me! It's a totally and completely irrational fear... but hey, whatcha gonna do? Anyways, parasites are actually suprisingly common. Not so much in developed countries as they are in developing countries. In parts of south america worms are REALLY commom, like entire communities have them. It's usually from poor sanitation or certain cultural foods. There are so many different kinds of them out there, and in general, unless the parasite travels to your brain (SCARY!), you can pretty much co-exist with them without them having a major influence on your life. It would be totally unnecessary to deworm someone on a regular basis. Medication to deworm can have serious side effects because it also can destroy our cells because the structure of human and helminth cells are relatively similar.
