possibly stress asthma?
okay here are my symptoms:
i get shortness of breath, it feels like my chest is going to cave in, and my heart rate speeds way up. this has been occuring for over 2 years. i have had tests, but every time i schedule an appointment with my doctor, the symptoms are not occuring. what could this be?

Probably NOT asthma. Have you had Pulmonary Function Testing (PFTs) done? The only way to know for sure is to have a PFT. Schedule an appt with your primary care doc and tell them that you'd like to be tested for asthma at a Pulmonary Function lab. You don't have to be experiencing symptoms for the clinicians to be able to diagnose asthma; they have a test that will cause a mild asthma attack if you really do have it (methalcholine challenge). Don't worry - they'll also treat you if that happens.
It may be a cardiac problem or anxiety. If it's asthma or a heart condition, the proper tests (PFTs, cardiac stress test, cardiac catheterization, echocardiogram) will be accurate even when you aren't experiencing symptoms.
Good luck to you!

is it possible that this is a cardiac problem? i've suffered heart palpitations and my heart rate would go up, and i'd become incredably short of breath- i obviously can't diagnose you, but maybe its worth bringing this up with your doctor, if you do feel palpitations when this happens- at first i thought my palpitations were bad asthma, which is why i mention it. my only solutition to 'catching' the symptoms is to go to hospital when they occur. (please talk this through with your doctor as this is only from personal experience.) good luck
