If you have asthma and swine flu, can it kill you?

If you have asthma and swine flu, can it kill you?
I heard if you have a disease on top of swine flu, it could kill you. My friend just found out she has swine flu and I read up if you have lung/heart problems, then the chances of you dieing are higher.

I was wondering if asthma would raises the chances of her passing away.

I don't her to be gone :[

Asthma is a lung problem. Therefore this can increase her chances of dying of she has the swine flu.

Asthma is one of the pre-existing conditions that predisposes one to flu-related complications. With careful monitoring and treatment with Relenza or Tamiflu, she should be alright.

Incidentally, it's not just cardiopulmonary conditions that predispose one.

Well, H1N1 is pretty over-hyped in the media, BUT, it can kill an otherwise healthy human. Someone who is compromised in some way (such as asthma) would naturally be in greater danger. I think being aware of the fact that one has swine flu is enough to offset much of the danger. The individual is less likely to ignore serious danger signals too long before seeking help. This is probably why so many died in Mexico compared to so few in most of the rest of the world. The same danger, but, forewarned is forearmed.

I my non-medical-degree opinion, your friend is safer the more 'non-scare' information she gets. I don't mean to minimize any danger she could be in, mind you. She has already seen a physician, right? He or she has probably given her everything she needs to do to remain as safe as possible despite her illness.

More people will die of the 'regular' flu than h1n1, so, keep your friends spirits up and keep an eye on her so she doesn't get too sick to call for help if the disease should progress that way. Statistically, I've heard it said that one has a lesser chance of contracting h1n1 and dieing from it than getting struck by lightning. How often does that happen anyway?

In my rambling way of getting around to it, I'm trying to say that your friend is most likely to be absolutely fine after a week or so. Either way, everything that can be done, probably, has been done. Now be strong for your friend if she needs it and rent a lot of good movies to watch with her... Notice I'm not worried about you getting sick too?

I'll be glad to join you for moral support, which, I guess I'm doing here....
