Trouble Breathing in City Environment?

Trouble Breathing in City Environment?
I moved to the D.C. area recently and for the first year, I was ok, but last April (2008) I had some kind of major anxiety attack, I think, and it caused my entire body to shake from head to toe. It lasted about 3 hours in the middle of the night. Since then I have found that I have trouble breathing, I do not seem to breathe properly. Recently, I have noticed that it is worse when I go into a big city like DC or Philadelphia. I do not feel anxious when I go in, it just happens on its own. I was a smoker for about 15 years and quit just about the time this started. I have trouble with car exhaust, other smokers, or any kind of fumes. I also have trouble in summertime with hot, humid air. I have been checked out by pulmonologists at some of the best hospitals and I do not have asthma, COPD, etc. They say I am fine. I do have acid reflux and wasnt sure if that could be a factor. Has anyone else ever experienced this situation? Is there a name or treatment for what I am experiencing? I am just an anxiety sufferer? ONLY serious replies, please. Thank you for your help and input.

Whatever the pulmonologists say it sounds like asthma. The tests can be misleading. If it happens every time you're exposed to fumes etc. than get a second opinion. You need to have an inhaler with you just in case, so go to any other doctor and see what they say. I just don't believe in coincidence like that.God bless and help you.

You seem to have a combination of what would be considered atopic and non-atopic asthma. The atopic would be your allergic response to the environment, ie your reaction to car exhaust, others smoking, fines and humid air. The non-atopic would be your GERD (and GERD is seen 3 times more in asthma patients than non-asthmatics). You could go to get a skin allergy test to see if you would have an increase in IgE, which shows that you have an immune response to some stimulant, in your case the environmental triggers. So what they have to do is do more testing to trigger a response to see if you have asthma by causing your airways to have what is caused a bronchospasm. And it is no wonder that you would have an anxiety attack if you have these reactions. Btw, I don't know if you are taking over the counter medications for your GERD, or actually some prescribed medication, like Nexium. Look into that too, and good luck to you.
