I was diagnosed with asthma today, and I used my inhaler for the first time an hour ago, and it didn't help?
I went to the doctor and he said I have asthma and I used my inhaler for the first time an hour ago. The pharmacist showed me how so I know I used it right. But it hasn't helped at all!

What inhaler was it? If it was albuterol, it should have worked almost immediately or you weren't using it correctly (I know you said you used it right...I'm just saying). If it was Qvar or Advair or something similiar to that--it can take from a few hours to a few days for it to actually start working.
I'm no doctor, but I do take inhalers.

I really must agree with Heather. Pharmacists are not necessaryily the best people to teach you how to use an inhaler. If you were prescribed albuterol or another fast acting inhaler were you given a spacing chamber with it? Did you hold your breath for ten seconds after you inhaled the medication? Did you wait five minutes before you took the second puff? If it was a discus type inhaler such as advair you won't get any relief for about 1-2 hours. If this is the case I'd be quite upset with my physician as any one with asthma regardless the severity must have a recue inhaler at all times. If you don't feel better soon and continue to have trouble breathing have someone take you to the ED. Don't drive yourself! If it gets really bad, call 911.

i have asthma too. inhalers sometimes dont work immediately especially if you are really congested. sleep with a humidifier tonite you'll feel alot better in the morning. and if you smoke dont smoke at all cuz it will make it 10x worse.

Did your shortness of breath get worse after you took the inhaler? If so, you need to tell your doctor immediately, because in a very few people, drugs like advair actually make asthma problems worse.
Also, did your physician give you a "Flow-meter"? They are plastic devices that you blow into, and it measures your lung function. If he did, what was your last flow meter reading? Did he talk to you about keeping a daily diary of your asthma symptoms?
As was said by another answerer, if you aren't getting better, you need to be seen ASAP! Go to the emergency department at your hospital if your shortness of breath:
makes you feel lightheaded or confused
keeps you from talking
keeps you from eating
keeps you from sleeping

The inhalers are for rescue in my option as a CRT. Using a Bronchodilator in a Nebulizer will benefit you longer as a maintenance therapy. and use the Inhalers for times you are way from home or need something between Nebulizer treatments. this is normally 4xd. Talk to you doctor and see if this would work for you. the new medication of choice is Perforomist 2xd . the other is called Brovana, both are long acting dilators , Albubuteral and Zopenex would be used 1xd as a rescue. a important note- the Brovana and Perforomist should not be used as a rescue..it takes about 6min to work, where the alb. and xopenex is a short acting and will take care of the Asthma attack.
I hope this helps and i didn't ramble on so .
