COPD is actually a condition where your alvioli (the structures responsible for taking the oxygen you breathe and getting it into your blood) are damaged and cannot do their job correctly. Most people with COPD also have other lung conditions, such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma to further complicate things.
