How to convince my brother to get cat allergy shots? Is it worth it?
For a long time I have really wanted to get a cat but haven't been able to because my brother is mildly allergic (itchy watery eyes). Our family has been talking about it a lot lately, and were interested in allergy shots. After an appt. with an allergist we found that the costs are covered by our plan, although the side effect of the weekly shots is a 40% chance of getting asthma. How can I convince him to get the shots?!?!?

I'm glad I did it. they really helped. And after a while you stop getting them but you're still not allergic. He probably has other allergies that the shots would help with, too.

He should do so. My fiance is on prescription allergy pills and before he couldn't even be around cats, now we have 2 cats and he is completely fine around them.

Shots won't CURE his allergy only HELP relieve it a little...don't be selfish!

You don't convince someone to get those shots if there's that high a risk of getting asthma. How would you like it if the tables were turned, and YOU stood the chance of getting asthma because of something that HE wanted? I don't think you'd go for it.
I took the shots for a while, and got asthma. It's a VERY bad trade. That doesn't necessarily mean that you can't get a cat, though. Some allergic people develop a resistance to cats they'e around a lot. Also, there are other alternatives to the shots; products like Flonase do a very nice job of handling allergies and don't have NEARLY the potential for side effects that the shots do. There are also non-drowsy medications like Claratin that work very well for some people. If he has lots of allergies, then this may be something that will benefit him in many respects, not just for you to have a cat.
I do see both sides of this; I love cats, and I have two of them. But your brother's health has to come first. If I could not control my allergies with Flonase or some other medication, then I'd have to give them up, much as I'd hate to do it. I'm lucky that Flonase works for me (there are a couple of similar medications as well); hopefully that will be a solution you can both live with.

I'd say make a compromise. If he agrees to the the shot agree that you will do something in return and perhaps this will help in order to be able to have a cat without him suffering.
Good luck. :)
